Treść wiadomości: Rain relieves heat stressed cane crops
The sun’s rays are warming the world’s agricultural system, causing a rapid increase in the frequency of scorching days of sun scorching summer months in northern and central Asia, a study shows.
In one case in central and eastern India, more than a year passed between the appearance of scorching heat waves in March 2012 and June 2014, as compared to two years in Central Asia. In both cases, the hotter months had severe effects.
„During the second heat wave in February 2012, the region saw about 40 scorching days in the period leading up to July 2014. The number of scorching days in the whole year increased substantially in the second heat wave,” said the researchers from China and Japan.
„On average, the amount of dry days during the first and second heat waves decreased significantly while the amount of scorching days rose.”
Climate change increases frequency of summer heat waves
The new findings should be relevant in countries like China, India, and Australia where climate change-related scorching is being reported. As a result, global climate scientists will probably need to update their methods of assessment for future years, as they will need to use the global temperature record from the past.
Climate change researchers have also published findings from previous investigations in Central Asia over the last decade, including a 2011 paper on scorching conditions for summer in Central Asia.
„The climate model runs suggest that during the last several years the frequency of scorching days has increased significantly. The researchers have now compared these results with the global model for scorching days and found a correlation of between 30 and 40 percent for the first and second heat waves,” said the paper’s lead author, Yan Xu, a postdoc at JINES.
The next issue for international climate policy will be the long-term impact of climate change on global crops. If the current hot summers make crop production more difficult, these effects may continue over the long term.
But in the short-term, scorching may become less of an issue. Even if hotter summer months, such as the scorching in Central Asia, only result in a few scorching days of scorching summer, the heat will probably cool in coming years, making crop production more resilient and producing better yield.
Crop production could improve because hotter summer temperatures also cause soil moisture to improve, so the soil can hold more water and grow more quickly. „Since soil moisture levels are improved even in dry areas like Afghanistan, they could lead to a decrease in the number of droughts, making crops more productive,” said Prof. Hu. „And since drought has a positive role in reducing soil and water resources, scorching conditions may improve in countries where drought has occurred.”
Man jailed for 22 years over bodies in barrels
The prosecution has asked for a life sentence for Mr Ewan O’Connor and a maximum of 38 years for Mr Hickey, but the judge has refused the latter’s request to be sentenced to a minimum of 12 years on each count.
Judge Hickey accepted a plea deal in which he will spend a minimum of 23 years in prison and receive a further four years’ suspended imprisonment before being eligible for parole.
A statement from the HSE said: „On Friday 1 February, a court in Ireland sentenced one of the most serious and prolific traffickers to two life terms for importing thousands of bodies from around the world into mainland Ireland between 1999 and 2008.
„The judge found that there was adequate evidence of the trafficking of human remains and they are entitled to appeal on appeal the sentence of two life sentences.”
„The judge accepted that there was a substantial likelihood of conviction for the most serious of the charges but said: 'I would consider not ordering life imprisonment if it were deemed that, as a matter of law, the prosecution’s evidence was insufficient’.
„The prosecution will appeal against the Court of Criminal Appeal’s decision.”
The trial heard on Friday that the bodies found at Ewan’s farm in Kildare near Dromore were of women who had had a fall.
The bodies were taken to the HSE’s Galway laboratory at Ewan’s farm in Kildare near Dromore, then shipped to a warehouse in Ireland.
The investigation began after the HSE received information on a Facebook page called 'Kildare Dead.
According to the HSE, around 200 bodies were recovered from the site and identified, and a total of about 7,400 bodies were sent to the site in the period between April and May 2008.
The bodies were kept in an unmarked container, with a number of holes drilled in the inside. The HSE said some of the bodies were stored for days before being shipped across the Atlantic and then sent to the US, where they were first incinerated at the facility in Texas.
One of the first bodies shipped was found at an incinerator in San Antonio, Texas in May 2008. An investigation by the HSE and others confirmed the bodies were there as a body. A second body was found at a different incinerator in St Thomas in Texas in June 2008, before reaching the warehouse at Kildare.
It has previously been revealed that the body could have been one of at least 12 women who had had fall injuries in New York when they travelled from New York to New England to take part in mass sex tourism.
A final body was recovered at the warehouse in May 2009 at Ewan’s farm. The investigation found that i
