Treść wiadomości: Govt paper discusses preservation of adelaide

A new paper on historic Adelaide by the University of Adelaide’s School of History has raised alarm bells on the future of a vital area.

The paper by Dr Tim Murphy, Dr David McLeod, and Dr Steve Leydon looks at the future of Adelaide, and suggests that if preserved, it would become a world-class city.

It states that it would be a „frenzied and prosperous” city, but would face significant challenges in maintaining it.

„It would be difficult to maintain the quality of existing buildings and structures,” it states.

„There may be significant costs to develop new buildings and develop a suitable public square.”

It adds: „Although new buildings are becoming more common and affordable in the city, they are also less visible than they used to be, so the need to maintain public parks, public infrastructure, etc, is a major concern.”

The paper states: „The major concern is that public space is gradually being removed, and it may be the case that many of the major spaces for public expression are being closed down at present.

„This would present a serious public inconvenience for residents, and would result in increasing levels of noise and disturbances to the environment.”

Dr Murphy, who wrote the paper, said the paper was a response to an appeal from former SA Health Minister Peter Moritz.

„That made me realise we’re dealing with an area where a lot of the history was stolen away, taken off the streets — in essence — and replaced by something that is not fit for purpose,” he said.

„I wanted to write a paper that acknowledged that and tried to preserve something that is still important.”

Dr Leydon, who wrote the paper, said that in his view, Adelaide’s city centre would become unrecognisable within 20 to 30 years unless it retained its historic character and heritage.

He noted that preservation efforts in the city’s western suburbs are focused on preserving old buildings and the structures of people who lived in those regions.

„But at the same time we have to be realistic, we have to realise that we need to protect existing structures and services in the City of Adelaide,” he said.

„So the biggest challenge for preservation is managing existing infrastructure and services that are necessary for public spaces to be maintained.”

He said that the preservation of Adelaide would be necessary to avoid a massive transfer of people, business and jobs in the area from inner west to southern metropolitan areas.

Dr Murphy said the paper did not give a number on how many people would benefit from preservation.

„I think there’s enough concern about the impact of this being a city without saying this many people would benefit from the preservatio
